Day 4: Lose 8lbs in 6 Days!

6 Mar

Day 4: Wednesday, March 6, 2013
Weight: 133.0lbs – loss of 0.8lbs

I only got 4 hours of sleep today and then lay awake in bed, pretty much, from 1pm to 5:45pm. I’m sure this was a factor in my dismally small amount of weight loss today. (I expected so much more!) I was not pleased with myself and knew that I had to step it up if I wanted to guarantee that I reach my goal by Saturday. I’m concerned because I won’t have time to exercise on Friday, so I pretty much need to be there by Friday morning, just in case. (always have a buffer!)

I don’t work a graveyard tonight, so that meant no planned exercise tonight. In fact, the plan was to go back to bed at 10pm so I could be up early for my early work day tomorrow morning – but that didn’t happen. I decided that I needed to go to the gym to burn some calories tonight, to ENSURE that I lose enough weight by tomorrow morning to get me back on track. However, when I got up today (first, at 4pm), my head was spinning with a headache (detox, again), and I couldn’t even walk to my scale in a straight line, let alone get dressed to go to the gym. So I went back to bed then to rest my head and then finally did get up at 5:45pm and felt a lot better.

Went to the gym at 9pm with the intention of doing 60 minutes of cardio on the AMT machine. However, I was sooo tired on the machine (that is, my body is very noticeably weak), that I really felt that I couldn’t (and wouldn’t) push myself to 60 minutes, after I got started. At 33 minutes in, I decided to push myself until 40 minutes and decided to be happy with that. But then I pushed it to 45 minutes, and then, finally, to 50 minutes – and then I was done with it! It was a totally hard workout and I was satisfied enough with my effort: 405 calories for 50 minutes.

My yummy green juice.

At home this evening I’ve been working on my green juice from 2 days ago (wanted to drink it before it goes bad), and I’m only 2/3 of the way through it now, and it’s time for bed (after 11pm), so that will be it for the day. I have an early day tomorrow, so I need to try to get enough rest tonight so that the weight loss fairies will be able to do their job tonight while I sleep. I am REALLY hoping for 131 tomorrow. If not, I’ll be really disappointed!

Oh, just a quick note: regarding how to calculate calories for juicing (online, on, which is a great calorie counting tool that I use), after doing a bit of research online tonight, I’ve discovered that it’s a safe bet to just indicate the calories for the vegetable and fruits that I’ve juiced as if they were whole and raw. Apparently, it’s the sugars and juice that all the calories are in anyways, and not the unused fibre. So that’s how I’ll be tracking that. Just for the record, my green juice today consisted of: 2 apples, a cucumber, a ½ bulb of fennel, 3 celery stalks, 2 handfuls of spinach, a few leaves of kale, half a lemon, and 1” of ginger root. It’s SO delicious – I highly recommend it!

Today’s calorie intake:  Green juice = 160 calories + 2 Echinacea tablets + B12 vitamin
Today’s calorie expenditure via exercise: 405 calories

Day 3: Lose 8lbs in 6 Days!

5 Mar

Day 3: Tuesday, March 5th, 2013
Weight: 133.8lbs – loss of 1.8lbs!

Wow, I feel noticeably weaker today. I actually got a half-decent sleep today (more than my usual 4 hours), although I think I was awake for most of the afternoon in bed, while I was trying to sleep. I was in bed for less than 7 hours, so not totally ideal, and I didn’t lose the 2lbs that I had predicted, but 1.8 is close enough! If I continue at this rate, I will reach my goal before Saturday’s deadline. (but I imagine I won’t be able to keep this up)

I had to get up earlier than originally planned as I made a (very quick) appointment with a massage therapist to work on my pulled shoulder muscle. He said it was strained and that I should refrain from the weight lifting for at least 2 days. Good idea, since it was really hurting yesterday, and I can’t imagine doing the same weight lifting routine today, as I normally would. I’m lacking in energy anyways, from the juice fasting, so I should probably lay off the weight lifting until after this weekend.

After the appointment, I had a meeting, and during that meeting, I started to get a headache – the typical “juice fast headache” that comes near the beginning of your fast, which is a sign of your body detoxing, so it’s to be expected. Of course, I should have expected this, but I wasn’t really thinking about it – or the fact that I would probably be really weak this week while only consuming liquids. In fact, I wasn’t really planning to go full on juice (smoothie) fast, but that is pretty much what it has turned out to be, just by default of the fact that I haven’t really been hungry!

I can feel that my stomach is very empty, physically, but I don’t feel that I need food, so keeping to the liquids has been fine. I made my green smoothie before the meeting (same concoction as yesterday) and took it with me. As of 7am, I still have a little bit left, and that is virtually all I’ve consumed today (plus a lot of water, as usual).

Anyways, around 8pm, at my meeting, I was really suffering from the headache, and thus not looking forward to having to go to work at midnight with such pain in my head, so I tried to call in sick, and get my shift covered for tonight. Because it was so late by the time I did this (8:24pm), I told my co-worker that if no one accepted the shift, that I would still go into work. As soon as I got home, around 9:30pm, she called me to let me know that she couldn’t get the shift filled, so I went to bed then to rest my head, and took a Tylenol, hoping it would go away. (and it did!) I’ve also taken 2 echinacea tablets today, as I can sense the very beginning subtle signs of my body wanting to get sick.

juicefasting book coverI had neglected to regard the advice of my juice fasting book (Steve Meyerowitz’s “Juice Fasting and Detoxification: Use the Healing Power of Fresh Juice to Feel Young and Look Great”), which instructs that one should really take it easy when embarking upon a fast – that is, he advises that you rest a lot, maybe go for a walk as daily exercise, and just not put much strain on the body in general. And here I am, working graveyards, and doing my daily cardio – not really conducive to maintaining a calorie-deprived body, but I’m okay with it so far.

As for the cardio, I did the elliptical for 60 minutes again tonight, and yes, did find my body to be working harder than even the previous night, even though I was doing the same low impact work out. I’m not sure how my work out is going to pan out for tomorrow, especially as I am working in the daytime tomorrow with an early day and actually “doing stuff”, so I imagine I’ll be winded by the time I have a chance to exercise, in the late afternoon.

For today’s weight loss, I’ll be happy with another 1.8lbs, though wouldn’t be surprised if it’s in the 2lb range, since I consumed less calories today than yesterday (no need for apple rings today! Although I did eat 1 cucumber slice, but I don’t think that’s even worth counting)

Today’s calorie intake:  Smoothie (301) + 1 cucumber slice (2) + Vega Pre-Workout Energizer drink (35) = 338 calories + 2 Echinacea tablets + B12 vitamin
Today’s calorie expenditure via exercise: 403 calories

Day 2: Lose 8lbs in 6 Days!

4 Mar

Day 2: Monday, March 4th, 2013
Weight: 135.6lbs – loss of 3.0lbs!

Yay! So I accomplished my goal for the first day, which was to lose somewhere in the 3lb range, and 3.0lbs is exactly how much I lost yesterday. I worked out twice (cardio for 2 hours) and barely consumed anything (3/4 of a green smoothie), so I’m a bit surprised that I didn’t lose more, as I’ve been known to lose up to 3.6lbs in one day with less exercise and more food than this, but I’ll take it! Also, I didn’t get a very good sleep today – I only slept about 4 hours -, so I think that factors into the weight loss equation as well, since I know that I lose weight while sleeping (but not so much with just laying awake in bed – I don’t know how that logically works).

Having said that, after I got up today after lying in bed awake for hours, I could feel myself in the very starting stages of “getting sick” (sore throat), and I know that it’s from the lack of sleep in the past few days – only about 4 hours a day. Lately, during my graveyards, this has been happening a lot: major insomnia, even though I’m tired, and it’s catching up with me already this week after only my 2nd graveyard in a row. I can’t afford to get sick this week and might need to take tomorrow night off work to ensure that it doesn’t progress more, but I’ll evaluate after my sleep after work today.

I had a meeting this evening and made my green smoothie to take there (apple, strawberries, spinach, protein powder, wheatgrass and stevia). As of 5:30am today, I have consumed that, the rest of yesterday’s smoothie, 6 cucumber slices, and 9 dried apple rings. The apple rings were a necessity after my workout tonight, as I was feeling hungry for food (not liquid), and although I made a beautiful green juice to take to work tonight, that remains in the fridge for later as the apple rings have satiated me enough.

Green Smoothie – after!

My 4am workout was 60 minutes of cardio on the elliptical trainer. My body is tired, but I did it anyways, as usual, and am happy to get that accomplished. I’ve taken in a lot more food today than I did yesterday, so I definitely need the exercise to cancel out the food.

Also, I pulled my (left) shoulder muscle yesterday during my weight training workout, which felt very apparent when I woke up today. It hampered my elliptical workout tonight, as I had to stop using my left arm on the machine shortly into the workout, and I hope to get it “fixed” hopefully later today, as it’s really sore and painful.

I hope for a 2lb weight loss after today’s efforts.

Today’s calorie intake:  Smoothies (382) + 6 cucumber slices (9) + Vega Pre-Workout Energizer drink (47) + 9 unsulphered apple rings (90) = 528 calories + 2 Echinacea tablets
Today’s calorie expenditure via exercise: 417 calories

Diet goal: Lose 8lbs in 6 Days!

3 Mar

My goal: to lose 8lbs in 6 days!

Method: Juice fasting/low-calorie diet + exercise

March9My goal for this diet is to get down to my ‘normal’ 130lbs by March 9th, which gives me only 6 days! But I think it can be done – I have routinely lost 5-7lbs in 4-5 days in the past, and I know I can do it again (although it’s been quite awhile since I’ve done this!). Juice and smoothie fasting offers guaranteed weight loss, but as I haven’t done a juice fast for some time now, I am not relishing it (a bit apprehensive), so I’m going to allow myself to eat some food as well, to curb any hunger pangs as needed and to sustain my energy so I can continue to work and exercise all week without getting run down and sick. (plus, I find that I can lose more weight anyways when I take in more calories than just a juice fast, but with significant exercise each day) I was just sick recently from overworking myself and don’t want to go there again!

Since my summer vacation last year, where I overly indulged in rich, delicious and abundant food for two hedonist weeks, and thus gained about 8lbs, I haven’t really gone back down to what I consider to be my normal weight: 130lbs. Normally I allow myself to waver in between 130 and 135lbs (what I call my “safe” zone), and as soon as I hit 135, I start to diet to ensure that I don’t surpass my safe zone. However, since last summer, I haven’t cared too much about this, so I’ve been finding myself hovering in the 135-137 area for most of the time, and thus (unofficially) allowing my new “maximum weight” to be 137. But, as of this week, I gained 4lbs to reach a very undesirable 138lbs, and I think I let myself gain that weight since I was planning to go on this fast as of today (March 3), so I was allowing myself to indulge in food more than I normally would, knowing that I would be deprived pretty soon. Wasn’t expecting to reach 138, however, so now I have an extra pound to go on top of what I was expecting to be at the start of this 6 day crash diet.

My goal for March 9th lies in the specific intention of wanting to feel comfortable in a dress that I plan to wear for a special event that night. The last (and only) time that I wore this dress, I was 129lbs, and it was actually loose on me. When I tried it on a few weeks ago, at 135lbs, it was a bit tight on me, so I chose 130 as a nice round number to reach that I know will, for sure, allow me to wear the dress and feel (and hopefully look) good in it. Plus, this is just the motivation I need to get back down to my “normal” 130 – at least for now.

So, here we go….

Day 1: Sunday, March 3rd, 2013
Starting weight: 138.6lbs

I started this day in the evening, after sleeping during the day after working a graveyard shift. Last night at work, I was planning to go for my usual 4am run, but this did NOT materialize at all, as I hit the wall of major sleep deprivation soon after I started my shift. My body felt completely dead, and I just gave into it and allowed myself to skip my workout (which I virtually never do!). But I did this with the compromise that I would go to my gym when I woke up in the evening to get my work out in then, and I did do that.

My friend, the AMT machine.

On an empty stomach, soon after getting up, I went to the gym and did the Adaptive Motion Trainer (a wonderful machine that burns significant calories even when you’re tired) for 57 minutes and expended 506 calories. Then, because I had a bit more time, I did 3 sets of 12 of the Standing Calf Raise machine. I hadn’t been to my gym for a really long time (as I’ve been consistently working out mostly at my workplaces instead lately), so it was good to get some calf raises done – one of my favourite weight machines there! Then I went home and did my upper body weight lifting routine for shoulders with my dumbbells, while I watched tv for a half hour.

Wasn’t feeling hungry at all during this time, but right before I left for work at midnight, I made a green smoothie to take to work with me, consisting of: a banana, 6 strawberries, a lot of kale and spinach, wheatgrass, protein powder, stevia, and water. This is a 322 calorie smoothie, but as of 6am, I’ve only consumed about half of it. It seems that when I woke up this evening, my brain had already shifted to “fast” mode, which has effectively turned off my stomach from wanting food. (I love it when that happens!) This is typically what happens when I do a fast: invoking “mind over matter”, my brain tells my body not to want food, and so I don’t want food (and don’t miss it).

I did my usual 4am workout at work. No treadmill at this workplace, unfortunately (running is my preferred exercise), so I do the elliptical trainer there, which doesn’t expend as many calories as I’m used to, but it’s still an okay workout. I did 61 minutes at 423 calories, and barely broke a sweat! Oh well.

But because I usually do want food (when I’m not fasting, 99% of the time), I am never looking forward to spending a significant period of time without eating! Food is so good. I love making it, eating it, sharing it, reading about it and planning what I’m going to be making next. When I fast, though, another added benefit is that it saves me a lot of time and money. Barely any time needed to prepare my daily sustenance, and hardly any money spent for the week’s groceries. Plus, you know that you won’t be eating out, so money (and time) is saved there as well.

Today’s calorie intake: Smoothie (241) + Vega Pre-Workout Energizer drink (53) = 294 calories + B12 vitamin
Today’s calorie expenditure via exercise: 927+* calories
(*the ‘+’ accounts for the calories burnt via weightlifting, which I do not know)

Continue here for ‘Day 2’.
